About Jan

Jan was born in the late 1950s in England but has called Australia home for over five decades.

Jan has a deep love for the natural beauty of the country especially of her spiritual homeland, her muse, Anglesea. Jan is fascinated by people, conversations, the human spirit, the seasons of life, artistic talent, and reality TV. Her greatest joy comes from beauty and colour, family and belonging, the lure of clifftops and an angry sea, the will to win and her beloved Hawthorn Football Club, the longest relationship and love affair of her life.

Jan has long worked in community organisations and in 2021 retired from her role as business manager of several social enterprises to focus on living her best life and focussing on wellness. Jan had spent the majority of her working life in community service organisations assisting those in society who were going through temporary disadvantage. Over the years Jan began to see a continuous pattern evolve around human behaviour, wellness, opportunity, and mindset.

“There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in” Desmond Tutu

Jan is a true believer that possibility is everywhere, and everyone has untapped skills and knowledge within them, throughout her working life Jan built strong teams of people to achieve what was once thought impossible.

Prior to retirement in 2020 Jan published her first book a memoir “The Suitcase” which allowed her to re-examine her life, and her life decisions and finally understand what is important in this wonderful thing called life. The personal self-reflection of writing her story was the catalyst for change and after retirement, Jan decided to ask a lot of life questions from lessons learnt, mistakes made, her own limiting self-beliefs and a desire to live a life of wellness.

At the beginning of 2023, Jan created a wonderful, dreamy vision board and decided to dream big and following her intuition decided to embark on a course that would ignite the fire within, and it was finally time for Jan to live her life on her terms

Outside The Lines
The story of how it become

They say every great idea starts with a single thought and Outside the Lines definitely grew this way. I had the name for the business before I even knew what the business was, so if you believe in visualisation and putting thought into the universe – well here I am.

I was having a tidy up of the garage one day and came across something I had kept of my daughters. Many, many years ago when she was around eight I purchased a lovely paint-your-own T-shirt for her.
I thought this would be a wonderful thing for her to do, sadly as most parents do, I encouraged her to paint it nicely between all the lines so that it would look as I expected it to.
How do you think that went?
No matter how hard I tried to encourage her to stay in the lines, and match the colours she did the opposite and painted it in with nothing but love.
My daughter wore this T-shirt every day for weeks on end with great pride and it truly sent me twitchy looking at the mess of the colours outside the lines the total chaos of it all.
Part of me suspects she knew this but she refused to unlove it and see the mess.

Looking at it many years later in her memory box it really made me smile and question myself as to why it was so important to me to make her conform and stay in the lines.
I learnt so many life lessons from pondering over that shirt  - and so the name of what my future business would be called was born.
I then just had to find what the T-shirt and life lessons were leading me to.
It would take a year or so later till I found the answer to my question when I decided to live outside my own lines and returned to study after retirement.
It is strange what lessons are waiting for us to learn and where they lead us, proving indeed that we are never too old to learn or follow our dreams.
